Behavioural Issues

DEFINITION

At times, almost all children show difficulties managing their feelings and behaviour, particularly during specific developmental stages. Numerous factors, including temperament, culture, relationships, health, fatigue, family circumstances, experiences of early childhood care, and education, influence the feelings a child experiences. Responses to these disturbing situations can include tantrums, aggression, unfounded fears, and excessively disruptive and anxious behaviours.

Due to the complexity of a child’s specific developmental stages, there may be no need for further assessment during their evolution. Most children’s emotional and behavioural problems are temporary. Ordinarily, the guidance of parents and teachers will provide sufficient support to address these difficulties successfully.

Some children are labelled as troublemakers or criticised for being lazy and undisciplined. However, they may have ADHD, which was previously called attention deficit disorder or ADD. This problem appears before the age of seven. ADHD makes it difficult for people to inhibit their spontaneous responses — responses that can involve everything from movement to speech to attention span.

To conclude, behavioural issues at a young age can lead to personal and interpersonal problems; if the behaviour persists in the teenage years or beyond, it will likely become socially unacceptable. In an environment where behaviours have not been well guided, people often act, react, and grow aggressively as their only means of self-expression.

TREATMENT

For the best outcome in treating behavioural issues, it is essential for the child to feel supported by parents, teachers, and any medical health support, all working together as a team. A comprehensive evaluation should be performed by an experienced mental health professional in behavioural disorders, usually in psychiatry or psychology.

Using specific tests and questionnaires, it will take several weeks for the specialist to establish a clear diagnosis. Hence, with a precise assessment, the whole team will be able to decide the procedure to be followed. In most cases, treatment with psychotherapy will help to control and manage the behaviour. As a last resort, medication can be prescribed.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, child counselling at Plaisance Counselling is a fun, safe experience that children always enjoy. They have the opportunity to make their own decisions for how to spend time in our sessions. I offer engaging therapeutic activities that allow your child to communicate in their language. When your child feels understood and comforted, their behaviour can quickly improve.

Additionally, I offer support to you, the parent, as you learn how to heal and strengthen your relationship with your child.

If your child has difficulties with behavioural issues or anxiety, or if you have questions about counselling for children’s behavioural problems, please call Plaisance Counselling.
